A contemporary addition in glass and steel, maximising views into the mature gardens beyond
Oxford, 2013

The Client wished to maximise the views into the large, mature gardens to the rear of the property. With this in mind, we proposed a contemporary addition in glass and steel. Visually the new extension would be read as one volume from the garden, although internally the space would be split into 3 distinct functional areas.
Opening up the rear wall allows a consolidated open plan kitchen and dining area to be created. Adjacent, soft furnishes would help create a relaxing Garden Room, with new doors to separate it from the existing Sitting Room.
We undertook extensive SAP (Standard Assessment Procedure) calculations to ascertain the house’s energy requirements. Specifying high performance floor-to-ceiling glazing panels (openable to allow the outside space to merge with internal space during warmer months), and a highly insulated sedum roof, which also settles the extension into the garden, ensured we improved the house’s energy efficient properties.
