Caxton

Extensions and refurbishment to an existing boathouse by the banks of the River Thames. Elevated living accommodation raises main spaces above and beyond the floodplain, and affords perfect views towards the river and surrounding countryside.

Henley-on-Thames, 2015

Situated on the banks of the River Thames, ‘Caxton’ is an existing boathouse that has suffered terribly from flooding issues in recent times. The owners recently obtained consent to use this building as a private dwelling, but because of floods, they were unable to use it as such.

The new 2 storey extension raises the liveable accommodation above the stipulated level set by the Environment Agency, while maintaining the integrity of the original building’s form.

A monopitch roof creates a dramatic counterpoint to the original massing and ensures that light penetrates deep into the plan of the scheme. New windows to east and west elevations transforms the old building into a contemporary, timber-and-glass structure that affords the owners the perfect view towards the river and surrounding countryside.
