Treehouse

Wrapping around an existing collection of trees, the structure celebrates their natural forms and offers a place to play and relax.

Cotswolds, 2017

Designed with small children, teenagers and the 'big child' in all of us, this ever-evolving project was designed around an existing collection of trees. The structure places minimal loading on them and also celebrates the natural forms that they have taken over the years.

A spiral staircase winds around a common lime tree (Tilia x europaea) to arrive at a play terrace, off which is the main circular treehouse. A series of curves accentuates the natural organic beauty of the woodland and gives a joyous play of light within the treehouse as well as the terrace.

During the summer months, the fabric roof canopy can be peeled back to allow the trees to provide their own wondrous ceiling of greens and birdsong; in winter it can be re-covered to create a cosy and intimate snug where stories can be told around the integrated firepit.
